Anderson Mill History
The area was named for the old Anderson Mill on Volente Road which operated in the area as early as the 1850s. Built by Pennsylvanian millwright Thomas Anderson as a gristmill, the mill was converted to make gunpowder from bat guano available from nearby caves. After the Civil War, the mill returned to its original purpose and continued operation until his death in 1894. The community was abandoned and it wasn’t until the late 20th century that Austin’s growth reached these outlying areas and Anderson Mill once again became an active community. The current community began its building spurt in 1975 and flourished throughout the 1980s. Homes continued to be built at a slower rate until as late as 2004.
